4 - D Ranch          Riley, New Mexico    est. 1980

A trip to the historic Yolo Ranch is a journey that takes you through towering pines, across grassy meadows and through rolling, water-incised pastures. Nestled in mountainous ponderosa pine, the Yolo Ranch is located in Yavapai County, 50 miles northwest of Prescott, Ariz. Cattle bearing the Yolo brand continue to roam the ranch as they have since 1875. Tip Wilder, a rancher from Yolo County, Calif., near Sacramento, established the Yolo brand in 1885. Not only did it commemorate the area from which he came, but also the brand was unique since the ranch name was spelled out within the brand. For that reason, it was a hard iron to work over and a difficult brand for rustlers to change or alter. Today the ranch, which is privately owned, continues to operate much the same way it did more than a century ago. With four cattle camps and 1,000 head of cattle, the ranch covers a lot of difficult, rocky terrain in some of the most beautiful country in Arizona.

Scribner Ranch, as it exists today, began in 1946 when Robert Zebold moved to Kansas from Arkansas and employed Lowell Scribner as ranch foreman. This relationship grew into a partnership on a cowherd, with Lowell continuing to work with the yearling grazing program. John Scribner was fortunate to grow up on this ranch and bought his first cows in partnership with Lowell and Mr. Zebold in the fall of 1962. This threesome continued to ranch together until 1999, when Robert Zebold passed away, followed by Lowell Scribner in 2002. The family connection with part of the ranch dates back to the 1870s, when John Scribner’s great-grandparents, the Robert Millers, acquired 320 acres of ground on Satchel Creek, and the A. Z. Scribners moved onto an adjoining 480 acres in 1898. Lowell’s parents were the son and daughter of these families, whose farms are still part of the 6,700 acres that the ranch operates today.
